At first, Santiago has not caught fish in 84 days. Next, he sets out alone to the sea in search of a big catch. Then, he sails far out into the Gulf Stream where he hooks a massive marlin. Following this, he battles with the fish for three days and nights. After that, Santiago is able to harpoon the marlin and tie it to his boat. Subsequently, as he makes his way back to the shore, Santiago battles sharks who attack the marlin.
